Meet Harvey Hoskins, CPA
As a part of Black History Month, we asked several TSCPA members why diversity in the profession matters to them and how accounting helps them leave a legacy they are proud of.
TSCPA member, Harvey Hoskins, CPA:
Q: Why does diversity in the profession matter to you?
A: With respect to African Americans in public accounting, the needle has not moved much since Bert Mitchell’s firm did the first study in 1969. It is critical that we do everything possible to change this. Without question, in a diverse profession, businesses do better; everybody does better when you are inclusive. I think those of us in the profession must do a better job of selling it. We must also be willing to have honest dialogue about what’s needed to change the culture of our profession.
Q: How does accounting help you leave a legacy you are proud of?
A: I have been a CPA over 40 years, 35 of those in public accounting. As I scale back, I am hopeful that I have encouraged others to pursue this great profession.
