Notice #26-15: Proof of Citizenship or Lawful Presence Required for Motor Vehicle Registration
Effective Jan. 1, 2027, Public Chapter 954 (2026) requires an applicant for initial motor vehicle registration that requires a license plate to provide documentation that the applicant is a citizen of the United States, a lawful permanent resident of the United States, or a person whose presence in the United States has been authorized by the federal government for a specific purpose and for a specified period of authorized stay. Effective July 1, 2027, Public Chapter 1007 (2026) updates the Financial Responsibility Law of 1977 to include additional proof of financial responsibility requirements, increases in current coverage failure fees, an additional coverage failure fee, changes to the frequency of insurer reporting to the Department of Revenue (“Department”), and limitations to noneconomic damages awarded in certain civil actions for motorists in Tennessee.
