IRS CP53E Notice Sent in Error
The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) in a recent notice is advising taxpayers who received a CP53E notice in error that, after confirming the notice’s validity through their IRS online account, no further action is required. The CP53E notice, introduced as part of the IRS’s transition from paper checks to electronic payments, asks taxpayers to update or provide direct deposit information for refunds. However, because many IRS notices are generated automatically, some taxpayers who are not due a refund may have received the notice incorrectly.
Before taking action, taxpayers should log in directly to their IRS account to verify whether the notice applies to their situation. If the notice was issued in error, it can safely be ignored. TAS also cautions taxpayers to remain vigilant when interacting with IRS correspondence, particularly avoiding links or QR codes that could lead to fraudulent sites. Instead, individuals should navigate to the IRS website directly to confirm their account status.
While the notice includes a phone number, it offers only recorded guidance and does not connect taxpayers with a live representative or allow updates to banking information. Members are encouraged to guide clients toward official IRS channels and reinforce best practices for safeguarding sensitive financial data.
